Electrical Fast Transient – Burst Immunity Test
The IEC/EN 61000-4-4 Electrical Fast Transient (EFT/Burst) Test is applied to measure the resistance of electronic devices against sudden, short-duration and consecutive high-frequency electrical pulses. Such disturbances generally originate from events such as switching relays, contactors or the switching on and off of inductive loads. With this test, the immunity level of the product against fast transient disturbances coming through power lines and communication ports is determined. The objective of the test is to evaluate whether the device can maintain system stability and functionality despite such interference.
Test Structure and Features
- High-frequency voltage pulses are applied with a pulse duration of 5 ns – 50 ns
- The repetition frequency is generally 5 kHz or 100 kHz
- Testing is performed through power input lines, signal lines and data ports
- Tests are carried out according to the IEC/EN 61000-4-4 standard
What Is Its Purpose?
This test measures the device’s response to high-speed and low-energy repetitive disturbances. Burst pulses may disrupt the functionality of the device, cause data loss or lead to software lockups. This test is critically important for systems such as industrial control systems, communication devices and power supplies.
Compliance with Standards
EFT tests are compliant with standards such as IEC 61000-4-4, primarily, as well as EN 61000-6-1 and MIL-STD-461. The burst generators and coupling/decoupling networks (CDN) used during the test process are devices whose accuracy is ensured through regular calibration.
