Harmonics Emission Test

EN 61000-3-2 Harmonic Current Emission Test is applied to limit the harmonic current components that electrical and electronic devices inject into the power network during operation. This test is necessary to ensure that devices do not adversely affect power quality and has become mandatory in many countries, especially in the European Union. The purpose of this test is to verify that the harmonic currents generated by devices when connected to the alternating current (AC) mains do not exceed the limits specified in international standards. Harmonic currents may cause voltage distortions in the network, device failures, energy inefficiency and electromagnetic interference.

Test Structure and Features

  • Tests are performed at multiples of the 50 Hz/60 Hz fundamental frequency, such as 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonics
  • Current harmonics are analyzed under the device’s nominal operating conditions
  • Harmonic generation limits are evaluated according to the IEC 61000-3-2 standard
  • Measurements are performed using harmonic analyzers and digital oscilloscopes

What Is Its Purpose?

This test measures the level of harmonic currents injected by the device into the power network. Harmonics may cause transformers to overheat, degrade power quality and even cause protection relays to malfunction. Devices such as lighting systems, computers, power supplies and inverters are among the product groups to which this test is frequently applied.

Compliance with Standards
